Two Atlanta Police Officers Injured After Gunman Opens Fire, Barricades Inside Cheshire Bridge Apartment
ATLANTA, Ga. — Two Atlanta police officers were injured early Saturday morning after coming under fire while responding to reports of gunshots at an apartment complex along Cheshire Bridge Road, authorities said.
According to Atlanta Police, officers were dispatched to the Helios Apartments just before 7:30 a.m. following reports of shots being fired. Upon arrival, officers observed signs indicating gunfire had come from inside one of the apartments.
Police said officers entered the unit and opened a door to a rear bedroom, at which point the individual inside began shooting at them. Investigators stated that one officer was grazed in the head by a bullet, while another officer sustained shrapnel injuries to an arm. Officers returned fire, though authorities said it does not appear the suspect was struck.
Following the exchange, officers were able to exit the apartment safely. The suspect remained inside and barricaded themselves in the unit, prompting a large law enforcement response.
Residents described being awakened by the disturbance. One tenant, Isaiah Coemmons, said he observed officers carrying AR-15-style rifles entering the building after hearing significant noise that morning.
SWAT officers were seen entering and exiting the building throughout the morning and into the afternoon. A resident told Channel 2 Action News that the building contains more than 300 apartments.
At approximately 10:45 a.m., apartment management sent an emergency alert instructing residents to shelter in place, barricade their doors, and remain quiet and out of sight.
The injured officers were transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment and were later released.
Police announced shortly before 2:30 p.m. that the suspect had been taken into custody. Authorities said the individual’s identity had not yet been released.
