Attempted Armed Robbery at The Mall at Stonecrest Triggers Lockdown and Shooting Investigation

STONECREST, Ga. — Two individuals have been taken into custody after DeKalb County police say an attempted armed robbery resulted in a shooting Saturday afternoon at The Mall at Stonecrest.

Authorities with the DeKalb County Police Department, along with assisting agencies, responded to reports of gunfire at the shopping center on Turner Hill Road around 12:30 p.m.

Investigators stated that preliminary findings indicate the shooting occurred during an attempted armed robbery. At least one person was injured and transported to a hospital. Officials say the individual is expected to survive.

Police have not yet identified the victims involved in the attempted robbery.

The mall was placed on lockdown for several hours during and following the incident. Officers detained multiple individuals at the scene after they were seen running from the mall.

Law enforcement is asking anyone who was a victim of the attempted robbery to contact authorities at 770-724-7850.

Cynthia Roberts, an employee at JCPenney inside the mall, said officers did not arrive until more than an hour after the initial gunfire. She also stated that after the evacuation, police did not provide additional information about what had occurred.

DeKalb County police have not released the names of the suspects or specified what charges they may face.
