Deadly Road Rage Incident Ends in Double Shooting at Macon Family Dollar; Suspect Killed by Deputies

MACON, GA – A suspected road rage incident escalated into a fatal shooting on the afternoon of September 2, 2025, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and the injury of a third. The violence occurred at the Family Dollar store located at 3656 Jefferson Road.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire around 4:40 p.m. Arriving deputies found two victims inside a Nissan Rogue vehicle. Fifty-six-year-old Regina Darlene Smith was pronounced deceased at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. A second occupant, a 79-year-old male, was also wounded and transported to a regional medical facility, where he remains in critical condition.

The man identified as the alleged assailant, 43-year-old Catrell Ford, was encountered by deputies upon their arrival at the Family Dollar parking lot. After being given verbal commands to surrender, Mr. Ford immediately fled on foot toward a nearby wooded area.

According to statements from the two responding deputies, a gunfire exchange ensued, which resulted in the suspect being critically wounded. Paramedics provided immediate care and transported Ford to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the initial deadly shooting and the subsequent officer-involved shooting that concluded the incident at the Macon commercial property. The tragic sequence of events at the Jefferson Road Family Dollar is raising concerns about premises liability and inadequate security at the business location.
