
Birmingham Police Detain Suspect Following Fatal Shooting on Jefferson Avenue Southwest
Man Taken Into Custody in West Brownville Homicide Investigation
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Birmingham Police are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred early Saturday morning in the West Brownville area.
Officers were dispatched to a Food Mart located in the 5400 block of Jefferson Avenue Southwest at approximately 3:30 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, officers discovered an individual lying unresponsive in a nearby grassy area with an apparent gunshot wound.
According to Birmingham Police, preliminary findings indicate that the victim and a man were involved in a verbal exchange prior to the shooting. Investigators say the suspect fled the scene after the gunfire.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is expected to formally identify the victim after notifying the individual’s family.
Later Saturday evening, Birmingham Police confirmed that one person has been taken into custody in connection with the investigation. Authorities stated the suspect is being held under a 48-hour felony extension while awaiting formal murder charges.
