Fatal Shooting of Teen Anjuan Maffett in Atlanta Sparks Security Concerns
Father Remembers 17-Year-Old Anjuan Maffett After Deadly Shooting at West Ridge Shopping Center
ATLANTA, Ga. — A family is mourning the loss of 17-year-old Anjuan Maffett, who was shot and killed Saturday afternoon in the parking lot of the West Ridge Shopping Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Atlanta police are searching for a person of interest as the investigation continues.
Anjuan’s father, Eric Evans, said his son went to the shopping center to buy Timberland boots. Evans rushed to the scene after hearing that his son had been shot. He now avoids the area because being near it is too painful.
“I try not to even drive past this whole thing,” Evans said. “I go the back streets. I try not to make it this way at all because every time, I see him lying down.”
Evans remembered his son as playful and deeply loved by those around him.
“He’s a good kid. He’s a fun kid—and he’s really going to be missed by everybody.”
This tragedy is not the first Evans has endured; his oldest son was also shot and killed in Atlanta years earlier. He said the last few days have been especially hard on Anjuan’s mother.
“His mom’s been in and out of the hospital. She’s not taking it well at all. That’s her baby, and his sisters… I’m just trying to be strong for the family,” Evans said.
Police said an argument preceded the shooting. Investigators are now asking the public for help identifying a man considered a person of interest. Evans told 11Alive he does not recognize the individual and does not know whether his son was with anyone at the time.
He hopes other young people understand that violence is never the solution.
“Not only look at what it’s doing to his family, but think about your family. Everybody is affected by a one-moment decision. Having a gun does not make you a gangster. Being smart is not using that gun,” Evans said.
When asked for additional details about the person of interest or other possible suspects, Atlanta Police said they could not release further information at this time.

Atlanta Gas Explosion at Northside Plaza Apartments Linked to Copper Theft Attempt Raises Security Concerns
One Injured, Families Displaced Following Atlanta Apartment Blast Near Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Security Concerns?
ATLANTA, Ga. — A gas explosion at the Northside Plaza apartment complex near Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Tuesday night has been linked to a copper theft attempt, according to the property’s management company.
Officials with the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department reported that the blast occurred around 10 p.m. at the Markham Street complex. One man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. Nineteen families were displaced as a result of the explosion, though no other injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting affected residents.
Vacant Building Targeted in Explosion
The explosion struck Building C, which was vacant and undergoing renovations. Other buildings within the complex were also damaged. Fire officials noted that the fire was extinguished by 11:16 p.m.
Rick White, representing Integral Property Management, said the incident occurred when an unauthorized individual entered the vacant unit. During the attempted theft, an open flame ignited gas that had accumulated inside the apartment. White also noted that 911 calls were made earlier in the day reporting the smell of gas, one around noon and another by a nearby business at 1:45 p.m.
White clarified that the displacement of residents was part of an ongoing, organized relocation process related to property redevelopment, not a direct result of the explosion. He confirmed that the 19 households currently residing elsewhere on the property remain safe and unaffected by the blast.
Atlanta Fire Rescue, federal investigators, and Atlanta Gas Light continue to examine the cause of the explosion. The vacant building had been empty for some time as part of a planned redevelopment project at Northside Plaza.

Our Perspective at Georgia Victims
Georgia Victims - This explosion highlights risks when vacant properties are not fully secured. Even with redevelopment projects underway, acts of vandalism or theft can create dangerous conditions. When gas accumulates in unoccupied units, a single ignition source can lead to serious injury, property damage, and displacement of nearby residents.
Property owners and management companies have a duty to ensure safety measures are in place, including security monitoring and gas system maintenance. Incidents like the Northside Plaza explosion underscore the importance of proactive precautions and immediate response to reported hazards.
Residents or neighbors affected by similar accidents may have legal rights if negligence or inadequate security contributed to injuries or property damage. Consulting with legal professionals can help assess potential claims under Georgia premises liability law.
